Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is an American conservative Christian nonprofit legal organization that advocates for religious freedom, free speech, and the sanctity of human life, marriage, and the family. ADF claims to have a team of lawyers nationwide.
ADF was founded to challenge California’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage; ADF has also litigated cases opposing abortion, pornography, and assisted suicide. As such, it is part of the proper religious movement in the United States, an informal coalition of conservative religious organizations in politics and social issues.
Alliance Defending Freedom has been involved in a wide array of legal battles related to Christian values that have ranged from cases regarding student prayer at school events to opposing same-sex marriage. The organization has been described as a Christian “law firm” by the media and as a nonprofit organization by the Internal Revenue Service.
Alliance Defending Freedom has been associated with socially conservative causes; such causes include opposition to same-sex marriage, abortion, euthanasia, and embryonic stem cell research. The group has opposed the removal of religious references from public schools. ADF also works to advance legislation that would give individuals the right to display religious symbols on government property, such as in public schools.
The Alliance Defending Freedom Grants and Funding Program allocates money to individuals engaged in ministry by providing financial assistance. Eligible recipients include pastors, Christian legal scholars, attorneys, leaders of Christian churches and universities, missionaries and evangelists, lay pro-life advocates, and others who do not fall into any other category.
Donations from conservative Christian foundations significantly fund ADF. Its primary source of income is from donations, mostly from individuals. ADF has been criticized for its involvement in the area of Christian “law firms,” which are seen as encouraging litigation, and for its links to the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council.
