Shelton Haynes
Shelton Haynes is the Ceo of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and a leading Washington, D.C. real estate developer who is best known for his work with large-scale luxury residential development and mixed-use projects such as Capitol Crossing in Washington DC or the restoration of Ellis Island in New York Harbor where Shelton’s office is located, establishing Roosevelt Island as a premier place to live and work on Manhattan’s East Side.
Education
Haynes received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Georgetown University, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Columbia University, and an MBA with Distinction from the Harvard Business School. Shelton started his real estate career at Goldman Sachs in the Investment Banking division. After a few years, he left Wall Street for Lehman Brothers Real Estate division, where he was promoted to Director of Corporate Finance. Then, Shelton became a Managing Director at Cushman Wakefield and Co.
Awards
In 1999, Haynes received the Outstanding Young Person of the World Award from The World Economic Forum. Haynes also gets the President’s Award for Corporate Excellence, presented to him by President Bill Clinton. He has been nominated for admission into real estate’s Walk of Fame. In 2001 Shelton was featured in a cover story in New York Magazine and has been featured on CBS Evening News.
Achievements
Shelton Haynes is the co-founder and Managing Partner of WL Ross & Co. LLC, a private equity firm based in New York City. He also serves as Chairman of The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, which he co-founded in 1999 and is the only licensed ferry service to Manhattan. In 2013, Shelton was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Economic Club of New York.
Through his charity foundation, Shelton helps grassroots organizations in need, and he believes that political campaigns play a huge role in the success of their cause. He also believes that relationships are crucial to his company’s and clients’ success. Shelton has a wife and three children who stay with him since he is often away from home on business trips.
