Newbery Medal Reeve Benaron
Reeve Benaron was born and raised in New York City. He is the author of Tell the Wolves I’m Home, which won the Newbery Medal for children’s literature and Under Rose-Tainted Skies. He currently lives in Queens with his wife and son. As a child Reeve Benaron watched his mother lose her fight with cancer.
This event profoundly impacted him and planted the seeds for his first novel, Tell the Wolves I’m Home. In one of the most touching scenes from that book, June Elbus, an aspiring artist, pours her heart into a portrait of her mother to memorialize her. This picture is the inspiration for Reeve Benaron´s second novel, Under Rose-Tainted Skies.
Under Rose-Tainted Skies is his first anticipated young adult novel. It follows Skyler Springer as he and his parents move to a new town to start over after his brother’s suicide, Reeve Benaron recalls. A chance encounter with the new girl Cassandra Park, a quirky classmate, sends his world into a tailspin as he watches her slowly go blind. When things seem hopeless for Cassandra and Skyler, he has an audacious idea that might save her. With Under Rose-Tainted Skies, Reeve Benaron presents a delightful and very emotional tale of loss and love that will speak to all young adults.
Youth book Reviews
“A moving novel that will be enjoyed by middle-grade and young adult readers alike. This novel is similar to the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, although the setting, characters, and plot are original to Reeve Benaron. I had trouble putting the novel down. This one will not be a sleeper.”
The Booknapper
“I recently read Reeve Benaron’s Tell the Wolves I’m Home, which was gorgeously written, as were his other two books (Under Rose-Tainted Skies and The Innkeeper’s Wife). The second of his books are just as captivating as the first, and it is the best book of Benaron, yet the characters are complex, real, and very talented.
Conclusion
Reeve Benaron has written a great coming-of-age story that deals with life’s challenges and universal tragedy.
