Alliance Defending Freedom: Dedicated to Protecting Freedom and the Sanctity of Life
The Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal organization devoted to protecting the rights of
individuals around the world. It promotes free speech, religious freedom,
parental rights, traditional marriage, and the sanctity of life.
The alliance was founded in 1994 by Christian leaders but has also defended the
rights of Jews, Muslims, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and those with no religious
faith. On campuses across the U.S., the alliance has represented students of
various religious faiths and conservatives, libertarians, and others. Around
the world, the alliance has helped to prevent and stop the persecution of
Christians, Yazidis, and Muslims, among other minority groups.
The alliance has won over 200 legal cases protecting free speech and religious
freedom. It represented Michelle Gregoire, who was arrested by campus police
for handing out pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution on a walkway at
Kellogg Community College. ADF defended Jack Phillips, the
Christian owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, after the state
attempted to punish his business for declining to create a cake with a gay
theme.
The Masterpiece Cakeshop case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 7-2 in
Phillips’s favor. The Alliance Defending Freedom has had a role in 74 Supreme
Court victories and represented parties in 15 victories. The alliance worked
with the state of Mississippi in drafting its law that helped overturn Roe v.
Wade.
Alliance Defending Freedom strongly supports the sanctity of human life. It works to
defend women and children and safeguard lives starting from conception. It
protected Gulf War veteran Jesse Ramirez, who lay comatose after an automobile
accident. The alliance opposed Ramirez’s wife, who wanted to remove his food
and water and supported his sister, who wanted to maintain them. Soon, Ramirez
awoke and, five months after the accident, walked out of a rehab center.
Internationally, the Alliance Defending Freedom protects Christians and others from religious
persecution. It has partnered with other organizations and taken a leading role
in 30 victories at the European Court of Human Rights. Refer to this page on LinkedIn,
