Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal organization that promotes and defends the right to freely exercise religion and other constitutional rights, such as freedom of speech.

The Alliance Defending Freedom was co-founded by D. James Kennedy and his wife, Pat Robertson, in 1987. The Alliance Defending Freedom has become one of the world’s leading religious liberty or anti-discrimination advocacy organizations in recent years. The group’s work includes litigation, public policy advocacy, international outreach, education, legislative activities, and publishing.

Several national and international organizations, including the National Council of Churches and the United Nations Human Rights Committee, have recognized Alliance Defending Freedom’s work on religious freedom. The group also has received numerous honors and awards.

For example, the ADF was named one of the “100 Leading US Nonprofit Advocacy Organizations” by GuideStar in 2009 and 2010 and again in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

In addition to its work on religious liberty issues related to marriage, family, and military service policies, ADF has also worked to defend people’s right to engage in free speech. For example, ADF supported the request of a Vietnam veteran who was fired after publicly expressing his opposition to repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and other policies related to homosexuality.

Alliance Defending Freedom has worked to defend freedom of speech in the public square, including against restrictions on the distribution of unsolicited religious literature and against attempts to ban “gay propaganda” laws in areas such as Northern Ireland. The group is also involved in protecting free-speech rights in the workplace and defending writers’ rights during university disciplinary proceedings.

The ADF has actively opposed efforts to limit religious liberty in the areas of family and military service policies. It is currently involved in defending the rights of female military chaplains to serve alongside men in a manner that reflects their sincerely held religious beliefs. The Alliance Defending Freedom also aggressively defends students’ rights to express their views on campuses, including over such issues as gay marriage, prayer at public school events, mandatory prayer at college graduation ceremonies, and “free speech zones” on college campuses.

The ADF also protects the religious freedom of Christian organizations and individuals in the workplace. The group actively opposes mandates that allow men who identify as women to use women’s restrooms and locker rooms. It supports businesses that wish to avoid being forced to pay for abortion-inducing drugs and other procedures that violate their owners’ ownership consciences. To this end, the ADF has sought to ensure that people of all faiths are free from compulsory participation in activities contrary to their beliefs without fear of government punishment.
