What You Should Know about Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom was founded in 1994 as Alliance Defense Fund. The mission of the organization is to protect various freedoms for people of all walks of life. Some of these include the following: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, parental rights, freedom of religion and sanctity of life.
The world has changed and many freedoms that people enjoy are becoming restricted. Alliance Defending Freedom stands up for those that do not feel like their voices or rights are being respected.
One milestone victory for the organization was when they went before the Supreme Court of the United States to argue the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission in 2017 and 2018. This case involved a small business owner named Jack Phillips. Mr. Phillips owns and operates his own bakery in the state of Colorado. In 2012, he made the decision to refuse to create a wedding cake for a same sex couple. He did so because this goes against his Christian beliefs.
The couple complained to the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and the Commission went on to file a Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act charge against Masterpiece Cakeshop despite the fact that same sex marriages were not legally recognized in his home state in 2012. Alliance Defending Freedom won the case 7-2. Now all Americans have the right to have their religious beliefs respected not only in public, but at their place of work as well.
Alliance Defending Freedom also represented a young student at Kellogg Community College named Michelle Gregoire. Michelle was standing on the sidewalk at the college with a few friends and gave out copies of the Constitution because she wanted to promote her new club on campus.
Miss Gregoire and her friends were not violent, screaming or impeding people from getting to class, yet they were arrested and were accused of trespassing. They spent several hours in jail just for exercising their freedom of speech.
Alliance Defending Freedom filed a federal lawsuit on the group’s behalf so that other students would not face the same type of mistreatment.
