Richard Liu is the founder and CEO of JD.com, previously known as Jingdong and 360buy Ltd. Richard was born in 1973 in Suqian, a region of China’s Jiangsu province.
Mr. Liu attended the People’s University of China, earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Liu was also interested in learning computer programming, thus joining China Europe International Business School. After completing his studies, Liu earned EMBA.
Career
Richard Liu became a sole proprietor in Beijing, where he started Jingdong in 1998. The corporation sells magneto-optical goods like CD ROMs. Richard’s company experienced rapid growth and expansion across China. The company had stores in Shanghai and Beijing.
However, the SARS plague threatened to limit the expansion of his business. Mr. Liu decided to venture into the uncharted waters of e-commerce. The volume of online buyers increased globally, resulting in the formation of JD.com.
In 2004, Richard’s online platform diversified to other products, including mobile phones, electronics, and computers. Richard changed the name of the company from 360buy.com to JD.com in 2013.
Liu’s determination in his work produced one of China’s most remarkable e-commerce companies. His ideas allowed the company to source products directly from distributors and resell them to customers.
