Inside Michael Polk’s Second Act at Implus

Retirement did not suit Michael Polk Newell Brands for long. After leaving his post as CEO of Newell Brands in 2019, a role he held since 2011, Polk stepped away from corporate life. The break was brief. Berkshire Partners came calling in 2020 with an offer to lead transformation efforts at Implus LLC, a fitness accessories portfolio company, and Polk returned to work on his own terms.

Building on Decades of Experience

Before Newell, Polk spent years at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, and Unilever, developing the kind of broad consumer goods expertise that few executives can claim. That background has served him well at Implus, where he has focused on strengthening the company’s operational model while helping it navigate pandemic-related disruptions early in his tenure. Michael Polk has said the exposure to nearly every function of the business, from logistics to commercial strategy, has been one of the more unexpected benefits of working at a smaller company. Large companies build specialists over time. Small companies build generalists fast, and Polk has embraced that pace.

A Hands-On Style

What sets this stage of Michael Polk’s career apart is how close he now stays to the actual work. “I spend much more time doing the brand and business development work directly with my team as opposed to focusing on resource allocation and having to work through layers in the organization to influence the demand-creation or cost-reduction choices people are making,” he explains. He also described the day-to-day intensity of the role in vivid terms: “I am right there with them in the crucible, helping them make the choices that are going to drive our business forward.” That level of involvement marks a departure from his years managing through layers of executives at Newell Brands, where his decisions often moved through several tiers of management before reaching the front line. For Michael Polk, closing that distance has turned out to be one of the most satisfying parts of leading Implus. Refer to this article to learn more.
