Alliance Defending Freedom Exists to Protect Your Religious Rights
Alliance Defending Freedom has been around since the mid-90s. It was founded as Alliance Defense Fund. They are a nonprofit organization, dedicated to defending people’s religious freedoms all over the world. Although founded by Christians, they have a track record of defending people of all faiths, including Jews and Muslims. Anywhere, people can be found whose beliefs are being suppressed by curtailing their speech or their lifestyle, the ADF will be there to fight for them.
Defending religious minorities has often been localized, with a majority of people persecuting a minority. Today, there are state governments and even the federal government that pass laws suppressing religious freedom. A recent example of fighting to protect religious beliefs was a flower shop, where the owner refused to arrange flowers for a same-sex couple because same-sex marriages went against the flower shop owner’s religious beliefs. The Alliance Defending Freedom stepped in to defend the flower shop owner, who was up against the overwhelming power of the state. In this particular case, the issue was whether the government can prevent an artist from expressing himself, as arranging flowers was considered to be an art from.
Another example is The Masterpiece Cakeshop case. This store owner did not want to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding because this type of marriage went against his values. This case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the Alliance Defending Freedom won by a resounding vote of 7-2.
Along with defending religious freedom, the Alliance Defending Freedom has a commitment to defending free speech on college campuses. There have been cases of students forming clubs, which are upsetting to the majority. They also work to help parents, and their right to educate and protect them against values being taught in public schools that are contrary to their religious beliefs.
